What NEF and PNG are for

Nikon raw capture. TIFF based, which is why generic tools half-open it and get the colours wrong.

Lossless raster format with transparency. The safe choice for screenshots, logos and line art.

NEF to PNG: common questions

Are my NEF files uploaded anywhere?
Yes — this conversion needs software that cannot run in a browser, so the file is uploaded over an encrypted connection. It is deleted as soon as the job finishes, and the result is removed after 60 minutes.
Is converting NEF to PNG free?
The free plan covers three server conversions a day, for files up to 25 MB. There is no watermark on the result.
Does converting NEF to PNG lose quality?
PNG is a compressed format, so some data is discarded. At the default setting the difference is not visible; you can raise the quality setting if you need to be certain. Raw files hold more tonal range than the target format. Highlights and shadows are mapped using the camera profile.
Do I need to install anything to open PNG files?
No. The conversion runs on our side and gives you a finished PNG file; opening it needs whatever software normally handles Portable Network Graphics.
